3. Informing Ourselves to Death?
The American society and the societies of Western Europe in the 21 st century have become multi-media societies that have been described by the terms “Information Age” or “Infotainment”. These modern cultures comprise the old or older media such as books, press, radio and television and the new media which
are mainly computer media and forms of communication operated by computer technology. The following passages of this paper will give an overview of the consumption of these old and new forms. The new media are of importance, especially in connection with the essential questions repeatedly stated by Postman. Besides television´s role the main focus will be on the internet as the most influential new medium of the last decade. What is it? What kinds of public discourse does it permit? What are the intellectual tendencies it encourages? What sort of culture does it produce?
