Chapter 12.

What goes around…

The morning air was cool on my skin as I leaned up against the wall of Colin’s apartment complex, The Law in my hands. It was early. An hour before class. The birds singing could still be heard over the mounting traffic. I hardly slept last night. Don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t scared. I’d witnessed much harsher things than a blood-stained window. But it had spurred an anticipation in me.

The Necrolord wanted to meet. After all this time. What was I supposed to think about that? And what would it involve? It was obviously some sort of trap. But the message had just been an address and time. Tonight. A warehouse in North Road. Fitting, as North Road was where I’d met the Necrolord for the first time. Now, that was a memory that brought shivers. The Necrolord had infused me with coal-like blood, escaping as I thought I was choking. A petite figure, wearing a black hoodie.

Was the Necrolord a child?

I banished the thought. No child held such intense malice, nor had the experience. The will.

You did.

That wasn’t Treth who spoke. It was me. And I couldn’t disagree. Treth didn’t know about my dark times after my parents died. Only I did. And only I knew what I had been willing, was still willing, to do to avenge them.

“Kat?” Colin greeted, with a hint of confusion in his voice as he yawned, about to leave for court. He was dressed up in his business suit, looking all cute. Like a penguin. A small part of me felt embarrassed at the thought. The other part didn’t care. Colin was my boyfriend. I could think what I wanted.

“Hey, Colin,” I said. His eyes drifted down to the book in my hands.

“Enjoying it?” Was that a flicker of both worry and excited anticipation in his eye?

I looked down at the page. I’d forgotten I was holding it. But I had absorbed some of it.

“I am, actually. The religious aspect is a bit unnecessary, but…yeah.”

He approached more closely, the unmistakable hint of worry creasing his brow. I felt his warmth, even at this distance, and wanted him closer. Damn class and damn court for stopping us!

“What’s up, Kat? Something happen?”

Too much. Andy. The Necrolord. Blood, blood, and more blood. And everything that had come before. Some day, I’d need to tell him. And hopefully, he would still love me afterwards.

“I have a mission tonight,” I said. “It may be dangerous.”

I bit my lip. He didn’t say anything.

“I’ll have people I trust with me, so it should be fine, but…”

“I know, Kat.” He tried to smile. I hugged him, burying my head in his shoulder so he couldn’t see the moisture in my eyes and that I couldn’t see his.

“I’ll see you after…if you’d like.”

“I would.”

“Even if its 3am?”

“When else would we see each other? During the day? Like normal people? Hah!”

I laughed. And it felt good. I released him and he me. The tears were not going to come any more.
