CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
An ID on the body? This was more than Grace had hoped for, and faster, too, since it was only five-thirty a.m.
"Who is she?" she asked Detective Stoll. Thoughts of Lewes Inc. were uppermost in her mind. As soon as she had a name, she could check on the databases and get information that might draw her theory together.
"Her name is Camille Patrick," he said. "She's a dairy farm owner in Tennessee."
"What?" Grace could hear the shock in her voice as she switched her phone to speaker, placing it on the bed so that Dylan, sitting up in the other bed, could hear this latest bombshell.
Their theory had been blown all the way apart.
Camille Patrick was not employed by Lewes Inc. She was completely different from the other two victims so far.
"A dairy farm owner?" she asked again. âSince when?â
"I believe she owns a family farm in the Tennessee area, that she inherited a couple of decades ago. One of the farm workers arrived at five a.m., and when she wasn't there to do the milking with him, he called her phone, saw that her car was still there but she wasn't picking up, and called her son, who also lives on the farm. He then arrived, opened up the house, and they called us when they realized she was nowhere to be found inside."
Grace shook her head, feeling utterly flummoxed.
"I guess we go and speak to the son," she said.
"Yes, if you could take a drive there, that'll be great. It's unfortunately right outside my jurisdiction," he said apologetically. "The other side of the river."
Grace hung up, and got moving. Quickly - with less awkwardness than there had been the night before - she and Dylan got dressed, and rushed down to the car.
It had been raining in the night, and they splashed through puddles on the damp, cold sidewalk before getting inside.
"I don't understand this," Dylan said, echoing her own thoughts. "I was so sure this had to be the company, being targeted."
"I also thought so. But now, we need to look for other common factors," Grace acknowledged.
Dylan started up, got the heater going, and then they headed out in the direction of the nearest river bridge to lead them over the Mississippi and to Camille Patrick's dairy farm.
It occurred to her, as they rode over the bridge spanning the gray, flowing water in the murky morning light, that the only common factor so far was the river itself.
