CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

His sister's case?

The words shocked Grace, and she stared after Dylan as he walked away, speaking rapidly but in a low voice.

Was there new information on Lizzie’s disappearance? She hadn't thought it would be available after so long. She hadn't even known that Dylan was actively looking for answers again.

What answers were there to be found? Now, she wished she'd thought to ask earlier because he might be needing to share after revisiting something so important to him.

She didn't have long to wait before he came striding back again, up the corridor from the small utility room where he'd had the conversation, shaking his head.

"Let's go," he said.

The tables were turned. Now, it was Grace who felt worried and concerned and wanted him to speak about a topic that he was keeping to himself.

Clearly, he wasn't willing to. Not now, anyway.

Following him out, Grace tried to put her worries aside. She knew that the nighttime hunt for the killer was going to need all their focus. With a deadly man still on the loose and perhaps out on the water, she couldn't afford for her or Dylan to lose focus.

"Where are we heading?" she asked as soon as she slammed the car door. "We need to try to cover the most terrain in the most likely area. Where’s that going to be?"

Dylan got on the radio and asked the question to Rosella and the groups of police who were forming part of this overnight force.

Then, while Rosella looked at her map, Dylan opened his iPad and stared intently at the broad blue streak of the river and the complex network of trails, river ramps, side roads, tiny settlements, and small harbors that lined its banks.

A moment later, Rosella replied.

"Head about a mile south from where you are now. There are a few harbors and ramps within a couple of miles of each other on the eastern side of the river. They're all close to where the previous victims' boats have been kept, and they're all too small to have anyone guarding them tonight. But they've been on my mind as a possible weak point."

Feeling glad for the guidance, Grace swung the car in that direction. The headlights cut the darkness. The air was far chillier than it had been in the day, but it wasn't the temperatures that were making her shiver. It was the knowledge that the killer was still out there.

Taking someone who was younger, if he was going according to those weird, taunting rhymes.

The radio was buzzing with updates and instructions as they headed out. Cops were in position, patrolling the harbors, keeping a lookout for anything suspicious.

"If you’ve checked the harbors and have time to spare, patrol the surrounding areas," Rosella directed them. "See if there are any suspicious vehicles nearby. Anyone on foot should also be stopped and questioned."

As they drove to the first of the harbors, Grace did the same, keeping her speed slow, looking at the quiet road with its overgrowth of trees and grasses.
