Chapter 21

It was after midnight, and still there were people hanging about the pub. Tristan had thought they had strict closing times in Scotland what with their Calvinist heritage and all. It was a clear night but the bonus of not getting wet was cancelled out by the fact that the temperature had dropped to minus five. The cold sweat that lay like a thin film over his skin had chilled him right through, and he had to make a conscious effort to keep his teeth from chattering.

On the plus side, he had had time to think, and he had finally made up his mind about the grand finale. Now that he knew how he would get to Magnus, it was all unbelievably simple. He pulled out his phone. His fingers were so cold, he could barely move them but eventually he managed to place the order for the stuff he needed and arranged for delivery to his hotel. Everything was taking shape.

As he stowed his phone away, the last group of drinkers tumbled out into the street and dispersed on the pavement amid cheers and overly sentimental goodbyes. Time to strike some terror into him, a little apéritif, so to speak, before the last supper. First, the flat. The stairs were round the side and in the shade of the neighbouring building, so he was confident that nobody would notice him. It took only a few seconds for him to run up and back down the stairs. The pub was trickier. He hung about a bit, waiting for a taxi and some people on their way home to pass. Eventually, there was nothing for it, he just had to risk it. He pulled his balaclava down and jumped out of the shadows.
