“Decker, I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I smacked my lips together and fidgeted with the IV wire.

“Navy… I can’t help you if you don’t help me understand what is going on?” His voice was steady and calm. Too calm. The kind of calm that makes you know the person is speaking to you that way because they know if their voice goes a decibel higher, you may very well shatter.

“Please, if you feel the same way I do about you…” Decker reached for my hands and intertwined them with his, “then you’ll tell me everything.” He nodded reassuringly as I squinted at him and swiped my tongue over my teeth.

“How do you feel about me?” I tightened my grip around his hand, feeling a wave of emotion crash through me.

“Navy, I’m falling for you.” There was a slight buzzing from the fluorescent light above us, and I couldn’t help but divert my attention toward it. My palms grew moist as my mouth grew dry.

The ceiling felt like it was closing in on me, and I couldn’t breathe. Trickles of smoke began to sift through the otherwise sterile air around me.

“Navy?” Decker’s voice sounded as if he were calling me through a tunnel and everything grew fuzzy around me.

My skin felt hot, as if it was shriveling away from the flames. “Fire!” I screamed, ferociously peeling the IV wires from my arm.

Jumping from the hospital bed, I instantly felt dizzier once my feet hit the floor.

“Help!” I screamed, clutching my throat. The smoke began piling into the room, and I couldn’t breathe.

Running out the door, I sprinted down the hall until strong arms grabbed me around my waist and his voice cut through the panic.

“Navy! Inject her, now!” Decker shouted. Before I could protest, a long needle jammed into my arm and I let out a defeated cry.

I squinted at Decker. “Bastard,” I whispered before everything went black.
