Children

The military lifestyle also impacts military children in similar ways to the military spouse; they must move and adapt during times when the service member is away. Given different stages of development, these children may experience consequences in their social life, emotions and behaviors, and academic success (Hall, 2016). Military children not only have frequent new homes but also new schools (Clever & Segal, 2013); specific impacts and severity are often contingent upon their developmental stage. Due to the numerous relocations, establishing and maintaining friendships may be difficult. Additionally, engaging in extracurricular activities may be challenging as relocations do not always align with sign-ups and tryouts. Another factor is schools across the United States do not have a streamlined curriculum. Therefore, children may excel in some schools while struggling to catch up at others. Due to some curriculums, classes offered during one grade vary, and therefore children may find themselves with a schedule adjustment that leaves them with students of different ages.

During times of deployment, military children are affected based on (a) their developmental stage; (b) the stay-behind parents’ ability to cope and the mental health status of both parents when the service member is back home; and (c) resilience, risks involved, and the family’s access to resources (Bello‐Utu & DeSocio, 2015). Leaving the military lifestyle may be confusing to military children, who are used to moving frequently and having parents separated. When moving into the civilian world, they learn of a life that is more permanent in terms of surrounding people and places. They may struggle with this new understanding of life and family and therefore need help processing their thoughts and emotions through counseling resources more specific to children (Arcuri et al., 2016; Wadsworth et al., 2016).
