Heartland
For the purposes of this book, the Heartland will consist primarily of the Piedmont region that makes up the vast majority of central Georgia. This is where the mountains end and the transition towards the coast begins. It is rolling hills and a topography that creates interest, intrigue, and visual splendor. The sunsets and sunrises can be particularly stunning, as the sun is not blocked by the mountains when it flirts with the horizon at the beginning and end of every day. There are beautiful old hardwoods scattered throughout the region, including stately oak trees that can often be found sitting alone in a field somewhere. Old barns and homesteads abound, with plenty of history mixed in. The intrigue of these buildings, juxtaposed with the rich and colorful surroundings of the landscape, creates tremendous opportunities for photography.
Most of Georgiaâs population resides in the Heartland, including major cities like Atlanta, Augusta, Macon, and Columbus. Yes, you will find a lot of people in this part of the state, but rest assured there are numerous ways to get away from it all, to explore the gravel road and see where it goes, and to pull off at an old historic church to capture a beautiful photo on a quiet afternoon. The Heartland of Georgia has plenty of beauty, and while the mountains and the coast are typically thought of as the most photogenic locations in the state, you would be remiss if you did not stop and smell the wildflowers (and maybe take a photo) in this part of the state.
