Chapter 13

I handed out the remaining amulets. We had left the ones on the police officers that we had put on them, and most of them were at the hospital getting treated. Now, we had to figure out who was behind the possession. Uriel had found remnants of a portal within one of the evidence rooms at the Division of Magic, and discovered the cops weren’t the only ones that had been possessed. Every prisoner they had brought into their holding cells overnight had also been possessed, of that we were sure. We had a print-out of those names and theoretical addresses, but the sun was already starting to set and we had lots of questions to discuss.

Azrael was going to meet us at the hotel. My father decided to stay longer since we were short on exorcists and Tabitha and I were capable of jerking demons from bodies and letting my father send them back to the Stygian. Teamwork makes the dream work. The Chinese food made my stomach stop growling, but that was about it. Dim Sum’s Noodles weren’t going to make it on Food Network’s Hidden Treasures show unless they did a special about food poisoning. I was fairly sure one of the crunchy things in my cashew chicken had not been a burnt carrot like I originally thought, and I wasn’t a huge fan of surprise protein sources.

Then again, I tried not to be an asshole just because, so I had not mentioned the suspected cockroach to anyone else, especially Jerome. He was a nice kid and would have felt bad about it, even though he was in no way responsible.

Azrael had a feast laid out for us when we arrived back at the hotel. There were multiple meats and side dishes of vegetables. We were informed of our soup choices as well as the salad dressing options for our practically mandatory bowls of salad. I went with the house balsamic because it was hard to screw it up. At least Azrael had waited for us.

He had brought us two more exorcists. One was a witch who deadened the sound, not letting it escape from our gathering, so I told him about Jerome. My father made pleasantries, but obviously wanted nothing more than to go to bed. He had flexed some magic muscles he hadn’t even stretched in a long time.

Hemingway mentioned the coven of seven and everyone agreed it didn’t make sense. Covens almost always have twelve members, although thirteen is preferred. I was enjoying a Cuban sandwich when klaxons sounded, and I had this insane idea that the hotel was about to dive.

“Worse.” My father pointed as I realized I had projected the mental image of the submerging hotel to him.

If it had been Azrael pointing, I probably would have punched him. He was the youngest Archangel at barely older than the Great Pyramid of Giza and possibly my favorite uncle. Nepotism was alive and well in the Bureau of Exorcism.

Through the large windows behind me, the city looked like Mother Nature was set to wipe it from the face of the Earth.
