FIG. 77.—a, Necklace of basketry beads and sections of bird-bone; British Guiana. b, Necklace of incised wooden beads; Venezuela. (7/4936, 9/256).

Another necklace of gum or wax beads on the original string was obtained from natives in Santander, Colombia. The material has not been fully identified, but it is quite hard and tough, and in color is black and tan. While the material was soft, the two colors were twisted together, in rather coarse bands, producing zebra-like stripes. The beads, or pendants, as their shape would denote, are of an elongate pear shape from five-eighths to three-quarters of an inch long and about a quarter of an inch in maximum diameter, tapering to a point with a lateral perforation at the smaller end.

Earthware Beads.— Two rather remarkable pottery beads of tubular form were brought to the Museum from Lara, Venezuela (fig. 78). One is three-quarters of an inch long, the other half an inch, both three-sixteenths of an inch in diameter. The clay of which they were made is of very fine texture, and has been given a burnished surface. The ends are rounded, and embellished with an indented line; the sides are ornamented with four rows of lengthwise punctate lines. These beads apparently were made on a round stem of some vegetal material, which was destroyed in the firing. The operation of firing produced a pleasing red-ochre color. Several other pottery beads of tubular form, also from Venezuela, are in the Museum collections. These, however, are without decoration; they measure an inch and a half to an inch and three-quarters long, about five-sixteenths of an inch in diameter, and are gray in color.
