Chapter 9

Jenna

The sun creeps into the room, casting streaks of golden light across my face. My eyes flutter open, and I blink against the brightness. It feels surreal, waking up in a beach resort with Nash, of all people.

I stretch, feeling the stiff knots in my muscles from working all day yesterday and then the long drive here. I glance over at the sliding glass door that leads out to the balcony and catch a glimpse of the ocean outside, sparkling under the morning sun. As much as I hate to admit it, this place isn't so bad.

Climbing out of bed, I tiptoe across the room, careful not to disturb Nash who's still asleep on the couch. His long legs hang over the end, and his muscular arms are folded across his chest like he's guarding himself from an attack in his sleep. It's oddly endearing.

I’m careful not to wake him as I brew a pot of coffee. The aroma fills the small space, and I breathe it in, hoping it'll clear my mind. With a steaming mug in hand, I step out onto the balcony to soak in the view.

The ocean stretches out before me, waves crashing against the shore with a soothing rhythm. Seagulls squawk overhead, their calls mixing with the distant laughter of early morning beachgoers. The salty air tickles my nose, and for a moment, I let myself get lost in the scene.

I need to make the most of this trip, if not for me, then for Nash. As much as I want to hate him, I just can’t. His success isn’t my failure, and I have to get out of my head and start appreciating the clients I do have. And besides that, our constant bantering and bickering brings me a lot of joy. It’s rare to find someone who can go toe-to-toe with me or who appreciates that I don’t pussyfoot around with what I want to say. Most people tend to shy away from me, which is maybe the point of why I act and say the things that I do. I’m just as happy to be left alone than to ever let someone get close enough to hurt me. Plus, he’s been nothing but helpful lately, which is more than I can say for just about everyone else I know.

“Spectacular fucking view.” Nash's voice startles me, and I turn to find him leaning against the doorframe, a lazy grin on his face.

“Fucking hell, man. You scared the shit out of me.” I take a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart.

“Sorry, didn't mean to sneak up on you.” He chuckles, stepping out onto the balcony and rubbing the sleep from his eyes. His hair is a mess, and he’s only wearing a pair of sweatpants. Goddamn, he looks good. His muscles are just about the most perfect I’ve ever seen, not too bulky but big enough to be sexy as fuck. The way his tattoos seem to hug the lines of his body doesn’t hurt either.
