The museum operates about 5km of the old metre gauge FC del Urola, which ran through hilly country of great beauty. It was one of Spain’s first electrified railways when it opened in 1926, and its last train ran sixty years later. The wires have gone, though the electrical control equipment at Azpeitia now forms an important part of the museum display. Much of the old line’s route is now a Vía Verde, a long-distance footpath increasingly popular with the region’s many tourists. The Urola’s buildings were designed to replicate features of the region’s distinctive architecture. The northern end of Azpeitia station presents a delightfully rural appearance, in contrast to the steelworks to the south. Here Aurrera arrives with a well-laden train on 12 October 2018. The Vascongados operated the regional mainline between Bilbao and San Sebastián which was electrified in the late 1920s, and Aurrera was one of the few steam locos which they kept on. She shunted at their Durango works for many years. The two leading coaches came from the Urola, and were probably built for its opening.
