The conceptual uniqueness of social constructionist therapy is most apparent in its understanding of the notion of ‘self’. The concept of self represents one of the defining characteristics of modern therapy. Psychodynamic therapy (as influenced by Kohut), humanistic therapy and cognitive–behavioural therapy (in ideas of self-efficacy and self-reinforcement) all rely heavily on an assumption of what Cushman (1995) has called a concept of a ‘bounded, autonomous self’. In other words, each of these therapies in its own way sees the person as a discrete individual ‘atom’, with the heart of that atom being a ‘self’. This image is nicely captured in Winnicott’s idea of a ‘true’ self being hidden behind a more superficial ‘false’ self. Greenberg points out the extent to which the everyday practice of therapy is based upon the assumption of a discrete, unitary self:
