Chapter 18

________________________________

I pushed the door open, leaning into it as it caught on the toe of Eko’s shoe. I had to kneel and pull the shoe out from beneath the lip of the door before I could get into the bathroom. Eko was slumped over the toilet bowl, the ends of his hair dipping into the water as he cradled the bowl with one arm. His other arm was hidden. I lifted his head and rolled him away from the toilet to lean him against the bathtub.

“Eko?”

He rolled his head, pressing his chin to his chest as he slumped to one side. I saw his arm then, the bright spot of fresh blood where he had pushed the needle into his vein, just below the belt he had wrapped around his arm. Eko’s familiar earthy smell was gone, replaced with something darker and ranker, it twitched in my nose as I tried to lift him onto his feet.

“Come on,” I said, choking back a tear and gritting my teeth. I just needed to get him back to our room. I called out to the man in the hall, “Can you help me?”

The man nodded and stepped around me, the tail of his bathrobe snaked across my back. He tucked one hand under Eko’s arm, waited for me to do the same, and then started to lift.

“I have a cousin,” the man said, grunting once as we caught the full weight of Eko’s body. “He was a good kid, doing well at college, and then he just got in with the wrong crowd. Broke my sister’s heart to see him like that. Like your friend here.”

I shifted my grip and tucked my shoulder under Eko’s right arm, grabbing his belt with my left hand. We dragged him along the hall to the room and the man pushed the door open with his foot, grunting one last time as we stumbled inside. We dumped Eko on the bed, and the man retreated to the hall.

“Thank you,” I said.

He stood there for a moment, looking at Eko, before catching my eye. “Best to get out now,” he said. “Just grab your things and go, honey. Better for both of you. Don’t let him drag you down.”

“I won’t,” I said, but whether I wouldn’t leave, or whether I wouldn’t let Eko drag me down was unclear, both for me and the stranger in the hall.

“Okay then.”

The man nodded once and then walked back down the hall. I heard him enter the bathroom, locking the door behind him. The pipes ticked and knocked as he ran the shower and I closed the bedroom door.

A strand of Eko’s hair rested over his nose, the ends flickering with each breath. I looked at his bare feet, thought about his shoes in the bathroom. There would be time to get them before Eko was supposed to sail, although the light outside suggested that it was already morning. I sighed as I slipped onto the bed, holding Eko’s hand as I wiped another tear from my cheek.
