Narchis put his hands in the back pockets of his jeans and stared at the floor, searching for the right words to say. Veilios' interruption in the form of a quick report, and an even quicker exit, had changed the energy between him and Zara. Where before, sexual energy practically crackled between them, now the room felt too small, and an awkward silence lingered.
"So, uh, what do you want to do now?â Narchis asked.
A part of him wanted to get back to the gentle exploration they had just begun, but the logical side of him was glad that Veilios had interrupted him. If he hadn't walked in, Narchis wasn't sure that he would have been able to hold back.
Zara was an asset, after all. A very attractive and willing one, but an asset nonetheless. He would not make the same mistake again by getting involved with someone involved in his mission.
Narchis nodded to himself, his conviction strengthened. Then he looked and Zara and felt all of that hard-fought will melt under her hazel gaze. Before theyâd gotten interrupted, her eyelids were heavy with desire, and Narchis' dragon stirred with pride when he saw the leftover lust in Zara's eyes.
A boldness shot through Narchis' veins, and he took a step forward. "Tell me what you want."
Zara took a step back. "I'd like to be alone in my room."
Ouch, Narchis thought.
"O-okay," Narchis said, stepping aside.
"I need you to make sure itâs safe first."
The slight tremor in Zara's voice made Narchis mentally slap his forehead. How could he have taken advantage of a traumatized woman?
Zara, who was away from home and everyone she knew, probably only reached out to him in search of comfort. Narchis felt disgusted with himself for not even seeing the facts. He had been so blinded by his own needs that he overlooked what was staring him in his face. Well, now that he knew what the situation was, he wouldn't put himself or Zara in a position they would regret later on.
"I'll check it for you, but don't be afraid of any Gleonites showing up here. Veilios already did a check and saw no sign of them. I'm sure Cimmeris will come back with the same report. Either way, we're all on alert, so you'll be safe. I promise."
"You can't promise that," Zara said, and her words cut straight through Narchis' heart. It hurt him to think that she didn't trust him to protect her, but she did have a point. He had let her down already.
"No, I can't promise that. But I vow to do everything in my power to keep you safe."
Zara nodded. "Let's start with a safe bedroom, shall we?"
Narchis followed Zara up the stairs and scoured her bathroom and closet while she watched. Even though he knew no danger lurked within, he was happy to put on a show for her if it would help her rest easy.
"Okay, all clear."
"Thanks," Zara said, walking in.
Narchis stood awkwardly in her doorway and watched her get settled on her bed before he realized that he was being creepy.
