Pierre LâEnfant wanted open spaces and parklands for our nationâs capital. Part of his plan is now known as the National Mall. It is a beautiful area with many trees, flowers, and ponds. Some of our presidentsâ memorials are here including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial.
N is for nationâs capital. Washington is the capital city of the United States. It is not part of any state, but within a district called the District of Columbia, named after Christopher Columbus. The federal government manages it. George Washington originally called our nationâs capital the Federal City, but people wanted to honor our first president and soon it was called Washington, the District of Columbia. Now we often refer to it as D.C., the Capital, or the District or sometimes just Washingtonâit has a lot of names!
N is for National Mall.
This is a place to play or give a speech about anything on any given day.
