The hallucinogenic toloache flower is still used in Luiseño initiation rituals.

Raven

According to the Tsimshian of the Northwest Coast, the first creator, Walks All Over the Sky, fell asleep, and the sparks that flew from his mouth became the stars. In the beginning, when stars were the only light, one of the animal-people lost a son and was sent a new child, called Raven, from the sky world.

At first Raven refused to eat, but then Mouth at Each End fed the child a scab from his shin bone, and Raven became so greedy that he ate all the food of the tribe. The chief sent him away, with berries and fish roe to scatter as he flew, to ensure he would never go hungry. Raven then flew up to the sky world and transformed into a leaf in a pool. When the sky chief’s daughter drank from the pool, she swallowed the leaf and became pregnant with Raven. The new baby cried to play with the shiny light that hung in a box in the house. When he was given it, he put on his raven cloak and flew down to this world with the sun in a box. When he smashed the box, light spread through the sky.
