CHAPTER TWELVE
As I headed back to camp, I could swear I heard singing coming from Skullgraviastan. It didn't sound like a camp song, because I knew all of them. This sounded different. In fact, it kind of had a Russian male choir sort of vibe.
My thoughts turned back to the conversation I'd just heard. Shelly and Blue Doug were going to frame Freya. Should I let the woman know? She'd been very decent to us in spite of her loss of face. It felt wrong not to. Maybe I could send the Kaitlyns with a message.
As much as I'd liked Shelly in the beginning, I didn't like it when people framed others. I'd had enough of that in the CIA. And sure, you could understand it in those circumstances, I guess. But here at a LARP event in the middle of Iowa?
Was it possible that Shelly and Blue Doug conspired to kill Steve? It didn't seem likely that they'd frame someone with drugs they got from a cop unless that was the case. Had I solved this already? The problem would be evidence. I was a witness because of what I'd overheard. But was that enough?
"You look like you've got something on your mind," Riley said.
I was standing in the middle of our campsite, and I'd hardly realized it.
"You vanished." Betty folded her arms over her chest. "We were going to send a search party."
She pointed to Hilly, who was handing out torches and pitchforks. When Hilly spotted me, she grinned and waved before dousing her torch in the firepit ash.
"That's nice of you," I said. "Did I hear singing?"
"Oh. Yeah. We're working on a national anthem. It isn't ready yet. We're going to premiere it at Mutton Fest."
"We are? I don't know the song." And it made me feel a little left out.
Betty looked at Ava, who imperceptibly shook her head. "Me and the girls will sing it. And you didn't tell me where you were."
"I was just at Game HQ to ask Shelly something." I looked around. "Has anyone seen Rex?"
Riley pointed to my husband, who was practicing his fencing with Lauren. I grabbed Riley's hand and towed him over.
"Nice footwork, Lauren!" I complimented the girl.
"I probably won't need it. I'm working on summoning a herd of coyotes." And with that somewhat terrifying explanation, she slipped away and offered to help Kelly put away the s'more fixings that Soo Jin brought.
"Did you find Red Doug?" I asked.
Rex rested on the handle of his giant foam claymore. "He went to Game HQ to pick up some folders and left to distribute them. I followed, but the girls managed to drag me back to camp. What did you find out about Blue Doug?"
"He disappeared after I was cornered by Detective Oliver Miller." My eyes went to Riley, who paled.
"He's here?" Riley looked around nervously. "He didn't have a shotgun on him, by any chance?"
"He left right after our little talk in the parking lot. But we may be seeing him soon.
