Amari clicked her tongue. This was what happened when you gave creatures too much free rein. Who knew what the kitsune was up to this time?

Since he’d arrived at the Repository, and they’d moved past the fact that he’d stolen creature parts and that she’d nearly killed him for it, Amari had grown rather fond of the crafty kitsune. He’d caused no end of good-natured mischief that had kept her on her toes, but he had a sense of honour that she found intriguing, and he was one of the few friends she had inside these mountain walls.

If only she knew what he was up to! If only there were a way that she could track him… Some Word perhaps…

Amari surged to her feet and walked over to the bookshelf, searching for something that could give her some ideas. Her eyes roved across the spines until she noticed a book from Diana’s exotic collection, covered in blue silk and with embossed gold letters on its spine. Her heart fluttered when she read the title: Brahma’s Creation: A Bestiary.

She pulled the book out, admiring the gilded flowers and intricate scrollwork embroidered on the cover. Carefully, Amari flicked through the pages. It was not the original – fortunately, since she’d never had the time or opportunity to study Sanskrit – but it was sufficient for her purposes.

She returned to her place by the fire with the book in her hands. It didn’t take long to find the section she was looking for. There were no illustrations, but she recognised the airavata from its description immediately. The five-headed elephant was a named entity, revered in Hindu mythology as the mount of the sky god Indra. She wondered if the creature in her holding cell had ever borne anyone important.

Engrossed, she delved into the literature, until her eyes started drooping and the book slipped from her hands. The Keeper’s breath came slow and steady as the fire in her study smouldered, ever-burning.
