There was a mental trick to moving with Rion. It involved two parts.

For the first part, they did not walk. Perhaps her brother would appear to do so when he was around Mia, but when she moved as part of him that wasn’t possible. It was as though their twin presence weighed them down, preventing them from moving in a way she was familiar with.

They could not step or move in a small, gradual manner. They had to surge. Mia would turn their attention to the place she wanted to go to, and initiate a rush of movement. The world around them blurred, colors streaking like smeared paint for a single heartbeat, and then they would be there together.

The second part of knowing how to move with Rion was to not think of herself as separate from him. Every time she began to think of herself as Mia, and him as Rion, they pulled apart and the awareness of herself sitting on a chair in an empty room became stronger.

So it was a constant test of her willpower and ability to exist in a state of calm focus to remain merged with her brother.

At first, as they stood outside the door of the room she was locked in, it took exceptional will on Mia’s part to keep them together. Either Rion chose not to speak, or he was unable to, and Mia found herself strangely wishing for his voice. Even so, without words, she sensed his presence, silent and encouraging, if perhaps a little harsh, urging her forward.

Two laghart warriors guarded her door, though neither of them was the white bodyguard who had escorted her earlier. The two warriors also had an elite look about them, with their heavily decorated armor and fierce weapons supporting that idea.

They stood with their clawed hands near their weapons, and their slitted eyes constantly roved the foyer.

Mia focused her joined energy with Rion and shifted their location to the middle of that foyer. Carved wooden pillars decorated the space, with slatted lanterns hanging from iron hooks. This tower with its working clock must have been a location of significance to the people of Sentry, perhaps an official building conducting the business of the town.

A heavy weight pulled upon her consciousness, blurring her sight, and for a terrifying moment she thought she would lose the connection to Rion. But she let go of the idea that there was a Mia who lacked knowledge of Sentry, and a Rion who carried her awareness. There was only a single whole, held fast by her concentration.

The foyer returned to focus, their combined pulse slowed, and once more, they found themselves in control.

More guards stood watch over a handful of other doors, each seemingly trying to outdo the others in their ability to be constantly vigilant.

They needed to find Kilpa. But how?

The feeling that was Rion in their awareness pulsed, like a warm light seen at the edge of their vision.

They turned in that direction, toward the warmth, and surged out of the building, into the darkened avenue.
