Nine

The second I was in my car, I called Jenna. “Where are you?”

She chuckled. “You didn’t ask me to call an attorney, so I guess that’s good news. I’m still at your shop. You walked out without locking up, and I figured it was a good place to wait for you. I also wanted to see if the goblin or Sam showed up again.”

Sometimes, I could be so forgetful, though being summoned by the police seemed like a good excuse to forget locking my shop. “Thanks for watching over things. No, he didn’t arrest me, but I learned something interesting. I’m headed back, and I’ll tell you when I get there.”

I did my best not to speed the few blocks back to the Village, since I was sure if an officer cited me, Detective Nick would hear about it and likely consider it further proof of my guilt. After I parked, I rushed toward my shop, hoping that running wouldn’t become a part of my daily routine. I found Jenna inside sitting on the stool behind the counter playing with her phone.

She stood when I entered, her eyes wide behind her glasses. “I’m dying to hear. What did you learn?”

I was so excited to tell her that I couldn’t stop from blurting my news. “Cyanide poisoning.”

Jenna dropped her jaw. “What?”

“While Nick was giving me the third degree, an officer walked in and handed him a preliminary autopsy report. On the top of it, someone had written cyanide.”

Her gaze turned bewildered. “But how could someone have poisoned Sam? You were with him when he died.”

“That’s the question, right?”

When I remembered the second half of what I wanted to tell her, I clutched my churning stomach. “I have some eerie news, too. That roaming fated death gnome? Nick had it sealed in an evidence bag in his desk drawer. He said they’d found it in Sam’s pocket.”

Her face blanched. “No way. How could that have happened?”

I shrugged. “I have no idea. I told Nick there are likely many of them, but that’s not true, is it?”

She pressed her lips together. “No. But I guess that’s why they’re the fated roaming gnomes. No one knows when one will show up and what it will bring.”

I covered my hand with my mouth. “Do you think it means I’m going to die, too?”

Jenna strode forward and wrapped an arm about my shoulders. “Don’t think that. My guess is that it reappeared because it wants you involved with Sam in some way. There’s already been one death, so I think it’s for another reason. We’re both women of action, so I think the best thing is to find Sam’s killer, and that might send the gnome packing.”

She was right. There was no sense drawing negativity into my life. Plus, I was certain Mary Mae would have warned me if death loomed in the nearby shadows. Or at the very least, she’d be somewhere close, waiting to help me cross into the afterlife.

I glanced around. “Sam? Are you here?”

Jenna shook her head.
