“And done,” I signed the transfer papers for Gideon’s purchase. Clicking two buttons on my phone, I turned over a huge chunk of the financial safety net Charlotte and Gunther had given me to Dexter Kane.

The dog wagged his tail enthusiastically.

“Now, here’s the contract for his kennel,” Hoyt said as he laid another paper in front of me. “He’s got a pretty fancy kennel, so it costs a bit extra, of course. Since you only have one dog, we had to raise the rate to remove Dexter’s volume disc—”

“That won’t be necessary,” I told him as I laid the pen down without signing. “I’ll be taking Gideon home with me.”

Martin Salvi watched with that bemused grin, but didn’t react.

“You’re going to what?” Hoyt asked. He and his father met each other’s gaze, both men mirroring the other’s shock. “You said you would race him! Are you going to another kennel? We’re the best—”

“No, I didn’t,” I shook my head.

“You did, you said you wanted the best!”

“I said that, but I didn’t say I wanted the best so I could race him,” I told Hoyt as his mouth opened and closed like a fish trying to get oxygen from air. “All I said was I wanted to buy the dog.”

“He’s the top racer in this kennel, young lady,” Jeff Abernathy told me, a nasty edge to his voice. “If you take him out, we’ll take a large hit to our points.”

“I don’t know what those are, and honestly, I don’t much care,” I shrugged. “I own the dog now, and I can do whatever I like with him. Right?” I reached down and scratched Gideon’s head while he chuffed, the tail wagging so fast it was a blur.

“Dexter, what the hell did you do?” Jeff Abernathy slammed his hand on the desk and yelled at the pastor, infuriated. “Do you know how much this will cost us?”

“Sorry, Jeff,” Dexter Kane shrugged without looking up, his eyes glowing with the number reflected from his phone as he gazed lovingly at his bank account. “It was a lucrative deal. And let’s face it,” he looked up. “Your son couldn’t keep the cursed dog at the track, anyway.”

“You witch!” Jeff said, shaking his finger at me.

Oddly accurate.

Gabe turned to step between Abernathy and me, when the operations manager of the track spoke. “Settle down, Jeff,” Martin’s warning came from the side of the room, his voice low but threatening. “It’s just business. There’s no need to be ungentlemanly.”

Jeff Abernathy quieted instantly. When no one else spoke I concluded this would be the ideal time to get the heck out of here.

“Martin, I know you asked me for breakfast, but I really have to run to the pet store and get stocked up for Gideon. Hoyt, what does he eat?” I turned to the surprised trainer.

“Raw meat and dog food,” Hoyt said after looking for guidance from his father as to whether he should answer. “High protein. Sometimes we add pasta. Vitamins. But on race day—"

“That won’t matter,” I told him as I patted Gideon on the head.
