CHAPTER 10

“What ya’ got?” Sheriff Davis asked as he drew closer. “Is that a piece of material?” He pulled out an evidence bag, and Brigid dropped it inside. It slipped down between the protective plastic and nestled into the corner.

“Looks like part of their shirt,” Brigid said as she took the bag from Sheriff Davis, and he held it up to his flashlight. She flipped it over to peer more closely at it. “Look, there’s a hem right here. It looks like the corner of a plaid shirt. I could see they were wearing a dark and loose top, so I bet when you surprised them it got caught on the strike plate mounted on the door. They may not have even noticed in their hurry to get away.”

“Their first real mistake,” he said as he stared at the fabric.

“No,” Brigid said as she lowered the bag. “Their first mistake was deciding to do these crimes in the first place. At least we stopped them from getting into the bookstore,” she sighed.

She would have hated for her sister to have to go through the same ordeal that the other store owners had. Knowing that someone had been inside and going through things while the store was closed was a frustrating experience.

“I gotta’ call Fiona and let her know,” Sheriff Davis said. He pulled out his phone and then paused. “Got a message from one of my deputies. Looks like we got the lists from the other stores. Now we can git this thing goin’.”

“Good,” Brigid said. “Let’s tell Fiona, and then we’ll make our list. We can start questioning people tomorrow.”

Knowing that the owners had finally gotten everything together, so they could officially begin doing their job was a great feeling. Plus, the fact that they had another small piece of evidence was exhilarating. A scrap of clothing may not seem like much, but it just might be enough to tie things together if needed.

Sheriff Davis nodded as he pressed in Fiona’s telephone number. “Go ahead and keep lookin’ around, just in case there’s somethin’ else they may have dropped hurryin’ to get outta’ here. Ya’ never know what might turn up.”

Brigid nodded and took out her phone to use the flashlight. The light was very dim behind the stores and the few lights there were didn’t give nearly enough illumination to allow her to see clearly. Sheriff Davis walked in the direction the burglar had gone while he waited for Fiona to answer, his flashlight illuminating the ground as well.

“We’re going to find out who you are,” Brigid mumbled as she searched the ground. “I can promise you that. You may have gotten away tonight, but we’ll catch you in the end. We always do.” She felt determined and confident. This person was not going to get away with it. She and Sheriff Davis wouldn’t rest until they found the criminal. Some way, somehow, they would find them.

She heard Sheriff Davis begin talking and figured Fiona must have picked up his call.
