Chapter 32
âMr. Haskell?â The police sergeant said as I opened the door. He was big, and the protective vest beneath his uniform shirt made him look bigger. The young man behind him was even larger.
âHi guys, I was just going to run a couple of errands. You mind coming back in an hour or two.â
âAfraid not,â the sergeant said and shook his head. âMight be best if you just come along nicely. Lieutenant LaZelle and Detective Manning are looking forward to talking with you.â
âAm I under arrest?â
âNo, at least not yet. But it would be a good idea to join us of your own free will, sir.â
âLet me just grab my keys,â I said.
âNot a problem,â the sergeant said as he moved aside, and the larger officer behind him stepped into the house. âOfficer Golden Gloves will help you find your keys.â
I smiled and looked at the name embroidered on the officerâs shirt, Stassen, T.
âThis way, officer. My keys are back in the kitchen,â I said and headed toward the back of the house. Morton must have sensed the tension in the air and had enough sense to stay on the couch. The cop followed me into the kitchen, and there my keys were, sitting right on the counter. As I picked them up, I noticed another cop standing on my back porch. I guess he was out there in the event I tried to make a run for it.
âThat your partner?â I asked.
Golden Gloves nodded and said, âYes, sir. His name is Track Star. Heâs very fast.â
I smiled and shook my head. âAny idea how long this might be? Just wondering if I should leave the lights on for my dog.â
âShouldnât be too long, but maybe it would be a good idea to leave them on, you know, just in case.â
I flicked the kitchen lights on as we headed back to the front door. I flicked on the front porch light as we headed out to the squad cars parked in the street. As we walked down the porch steps, Track Star came down the driveway and joined us. Thankfully I wasnât handcuffed because a neighbor woman walking past took out her cell phone and photographed us as the sergeant opened the rear door on one of the squad cars and then closed it once I was inside.
She said, âItâs about damn time heâs been arrested.â All three officers laughed. The sergeant crossed the street and climbed into his car as Golden Gloves and Track Star climbed into the front seat, and we drove off.
No one spoke on the way down to the station. They pulled around to the back and parked in a numbered spot, then climbed out and opened the door for me. I slid out of the back seat and followed them inside. We walked down a hallway past the front desk and waited for the elevator to come back down to the ground floor.
âPlease, by my guest,â Golden Gloves said when the elevator door opened. He graciously extended his hand, indicating I should step onto the elevator.
