“He was the second great mystery writer from that time. Both MacDonalds, Ross and John D, started writing in the mid-or late forties. But they hit the big time in the 1960s. Think Ross was a bit better known in the fifties, but in the next decade both received wide critical acclaim and hit the bestseller list. They had a different style of writing and wrote different styles of mysteries, but both were great writers. John D. was more gritty and violent, but not graphic. Ross penned very intricate mystery, with detailed plots. They were complex and involved, but he never cheated the readers. He had great prose, too. Ross lived on the coast in California and John D., as I said, lived in Sarasota. Two of the finest mystery writers in history.”
