Alma and Del looked everywhere, but they didnât see any Christmas trees.
âWhere do you keep your Christmas decorations?â Alma asked Uncle Marcus.
âGood idea, Alma!â Del exclaimed. Alma beamed. She was getting better and better at being a teacup detective, and she straightened her back and lifted her chin with detective pride.
âOh, we donât have any here. TÃo Ramon is the king of Christmas. He decorates for all of us. Wonât let us touch the ornaments or lights or anything,â Uncle Marcus said, shaking his head.
âThe king of Christmas?â Alma practically screamed.
âWell, thatâs what he calls himself.â Uncle Marcus sighed.
The girls sprinted upstairs, so fast they could barely breathe when they arrived at TÃo Ramonâs door. He and his wife, Aunt Dominique, were passing a crying Baby Richie back and forth, with lots of shushing and rocking.
âOh, um, hi?â Alma said very quietly. She didnât know if maybe a loud voice would make the baby cry more.
âAlma! Del! Come in!â Aunt Dominique said.
âWe could come back another time when Richie is a little, um, happier,â Alma said.
âNo, no, heâll calm down soon, Iâm sure. Maybe one of you would like to hold him?â
Del and Alma exchanged a look. Neither of them knew anything about babies. Especially not crying babies. They wanted to hold their newest little cousin, but they also wanted to wait until he was sleeping, maybe. Sleeping babies seemed much easier to handle.
âWeâre actually here on a mission,â Del said.
âA mysterious mission,â Alma added.
âOoooo, how exciting!â Aunt Dominique said. âI love a good mystery.â
âWell, this one is about teacups,â Alma explained. âDo you like mysteries about teacups?â
âNot the teacups,â TÃo Ramon said. âNot again.â
âAgain?â Del asked. âYouâve heard about teacups before?â
âOh, ages ago. I donât even remember the details. My mother told us all about a tea set onceâsome big mistake, some broken, lost something-or-other. I donât know. I wish I remembered more but, well, hard to remember much of anything these days.â
Alma wondered why a baby made it so hard to remember things, but when Baby Richie cried even louder, she almost forgot why they were here to begin with.
âDo you remember if you have one of the mystery teacups?â Alma asked.
TÃo Ramon shrugged. âWho knows what we have around here,â he said.
âWe heard youâre the king of Christmas,â Del blurted out. âAnd we wondered if maybe it might be with your Christmas decorations.â
âThe king of Christmas,â TÃo Ramon repeated. âThatâs me. You girls want me to decorate your homes this year too? I know you usually just have a wreath out front, but maybe youâd like a singing Santa or my snowman with blinking lights instead? Something more magical.â
Alma smiled. Abuelita would never let that happen. But Alma loved how magic was a little different for everyone. âMaybe,â she said. âBut for now can we just check out the boxes?â
