DAD LUGGED HOME A HUGE BOX OF FILES AND SPREAD them across the dining room table. He spent most of Saturday morning pretending our house was his office, which meant Nanda and I had to tiptoe around like ninjas. When we tried to turn on the TV, he gave us a lecture on the dangers of procrastination and the importance of getting math homework done, even though (a) Nanda didn’t have any homework, (b) Mom always says it’s our own responsibility to schedule our studying and (c) every other child in North America spends Saturday mornings watching TV.
By the time I finished my math, Nanda was using my bed as a parachute landing pad for army men (SO seriously abnormal). I went downstairs, where Dad was sitting in front of his papers with his hands folded and his eyes closed.
I listened for snores. Nothing.
“What are you doing?”
His head popped up.
“Saying a prayer.” He looked a little embarrassed.
Even though Mom was a Buddhist and Dad a Christian, we didn’t usually go to temple or to church. Just for weddings and funerals. Or sometimes to the Alliance church down the street at Easter, or the temple when there was a food festival. (At the food festivals, there were tons and tons of different curries and baked rice dishes and deep-fried samosas, all really cheap, so we would become dedicated Buddhists for the day.)
But this was beside the point.
“What are you praying about?” I asked Dad.
“About your mom getting home safe and the house not burning down while she’s gone.”
Which was a reasonable fear, if Nanda one day decided she needed explosions to go with her army men.
“Mom keeps an extinguisher under the sink, and they teach us at school how to crawl out of the house if there’s a fire.”
“Well, that’s one thing off my list of worries,” Dad said.
But he didn’t look as relieved as I expected.
