âOkay, who wants to give the first International Day presentation?â asked Mrs. Barr.
âI do!â shouted Andrea, of course.
âGo ahead, Andrea.â
Andrea rushed up to the front of the room with her notes. She couldnât wait to show how smart she was.
âI am the queen of Norway,â Andrea said. âMy country is in northern Europe. Itâs a little bigger than New Mexico. We are one of the largest seafood producers in the world.â
Why is everybody always talking about fish?
âMore than five million people live in my country,â Andrea continued. âWe speak Norwegian and we have twenty-nine letters in our alphabet. Our capital city is Oslo. Our national animal is the moose, and blah blah blah blah . . .â
What a snoozefest. They shouldnât call that country Norway. They should call it Boreway! Andrea went on for a million hundred minutes. I wasnât really listening. I just wanted Andrea to keep talking until dismissal so I wouldnât have to give a presentation.
â. . . and thatâs why we eat reindeer meatballs in Norway.â
âVery good, Andrea!â said Mr. Cooper. âYou certainly taught us a lot about Norway. Who wants to go next?â
We all stared at the floor.
âHow about you, A.J.?â said Mr. Cooper.
Oh no. Not me.
âA.J.! A.J.! A.J.!â everybody chanted.
I didnât know what to say. I didnât know what to do. I had to think fast.
âYou did do research on a country, didnât you?â asked Mrs. Barr.
âSure I did,â I lied.
I went up to the front of the room. Everybody was staring at me. It was the worst moment of my life.
âDonât you have any notes, A.J.?â asked Mrs. Barr.
âNo, I, uh . . . memorized everything.â
âImpressive!â said Mr. Cooper. âPlease begin, A.J.â
âI am the president of . . . Flurgenstan,â I said. It was the first thing I could think of.
âHmmm, Iâve never heard of Flurgenstan,â said Mrs. Barr. âAnd Iâve been all over the world.â
âWe are a brand-new country,â I explained. âWe just started last week.â
âGo on, Mr. President,â said Mr. Cooper.
âFlurgenstan is a beautiful country,â I said, âwith lots of trees and animals and, uh . . . food.â
I made up a bunch of stuff about Flurgenstan. I told everybody the national bird is the hummingbird. The national food is chicken tacos. They have a lot of kangaroos and yaks. I just said whatever popped into my mind.
âThere are no nerds in Flurgenstan,â I said, looking at Andrea. âAnd you know how skate parks usually close at sundown? Well, in Flurgenstan they stay open all night.â
