Chapter Five

ANGEL

Angel laughed in his head about how much he loved to watch Emily eat. She was like no other woman he’d met before. Normally, women as beautiful as her ate like delicate birds. Not his Emily, she was eating like a woman who hadn’t eaten all day. For dinner, they had oysters for appetizers, avocado Caprese salad, and traditional seafood paella. And Emily had eaten a good portion of it all. Now, watching her taking on the strawberry topped pound cake for dessert was giving him immense pleasure.

Emily looked up at him through narrowed eyes. “What are you looking at? I’m hungry.”

Angel laughed. “Shit, Mami. I believe you.”

“Oh, shut up!” Emily squealed, pushing another forkful of cake in her mouth.

Angel shook his head. “How do you stay so thin?”

“I run.”

Angel leaned back in his seat. It amazed him at how full his belly was after the main course.

“So, listen up, greedy,” he teased. “I got something I wanna talk to you about.”

Emily frowned and put the fork down on the plate. “Whatever it is, it had better be worth interrupting my desert.”

Angel stood and walked over to Emily. He held his palm out for her. She accepted his hand and stood. Unable to resist, he pulled her in his arms. He swayed side to side, urging her to dance to the soft music that reverberated throughout her office.

Since she entered the office in the sleek, black business skirt suit and silver satin blouse, he wanted to run his hands along her entire body. Angel reached up and undid the neat bun that imprisoned her silky, black hair. He pushed his fingers into her scalp.

“I am consumed with thoughts of you. You’re my first thought when I wake and my last when I close my eyes,” Angel confessed.

Emily snaked her arms around his neck and caught him with her mesmerizing blue gaze.

“I feel the same way.”

Angel’s face burned with pleasure at the thought of Emily as a permanent fixture in his life. But first, there were some things she needed to know. He wrapped an arm around her waist and led her to the loveseat. When they sat, Angel studied her face, wondering if he would lose what he didn’t even have yet once he explained who he really was.

Emily must’ve noticed his apprehension. She frowned and asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Emily,” Angel sighed. “I have to tell you who I am… what I do to make money.”

Emily’s confused expression made him even more nervous about telling her about his illegal activities. She was, after all, an officer of the court.

“Angel,” she said with furrowed brows. “I know already know what you do for a living.”

Angel shook his head. “You have an idea, but you don’t know.”

Emily leaned forward and placed her hand on his knee.

“So… you don’t smuggle weapons across international waters for criminal organizations, including the Savellis?”

Angel recoiled at the revelation.

“H-How did you-?”

Emily smiled. “I’m no fool, Alejandro Medina. I don’t jump into anything without knowing how deep it is.”

“Emily,” Angel breathed.
