You wouldn’t believe the racket it made. It was constantly moving in a clanking, vibrating kind of way. And the noise it made was rather humorous. If you bear in mind that we were all so intense and quiet in our work, this contraption sounded like a big animal that was after our attention. The thing was always groaning, wheezing and shaking; often the flimsy hut would shake along with it. Mind you, it was the only way, I suppose, of ferrying all those messages around the place. Someone told me once that the conveyor machines in BP were based on a similar one found in the big John Lewis store in London. This wouldn’t surprise me, as one of the senior managers that came to BP had worked there.
