Chapter fourteen
Caterina
I could have stayed forever on that beach. The air was nice and warm, the sound of the waves crashing on the sand was hypnotizing. Of course it helped that Matteo and I had just rolled around in the sand together.
I had never done anything so crazy before. Public sex? Not in my bag of tricks, but he certainly brought that out in me.
How was it that he could affect me in new ways even though we had been around each other since before either one of us could remember?
Matteo and I had walked up the beach holding hands after we had put our pants back on. It felt right, our hands together. We had held hands before, but this was different. His hands that were slightly callused held on tightly as if he never wanted to let go, whereas before he held my hand loosely, like he was afraid to be caught holding my hand.
I looked up at him as we walked. He had a manâs face now, though I could still see the boy I knew in him. He was in the slight curl of his now messy black hair. He was in the laugh lines that were starting to form in the corners of his eyes. He was in the softness of his lips when he kissed me and in the chocolate brown of his eyes. He was still the same sweet boy, just with a tougher exterior.
A much tougher exterior.
âMatty, what did you want to be when you grew up?â I asked, thinking about that lost little boy. âI canât remember.â
âA hitman. Like my dad,â he replied, and I frowned.
âReally? Even when you were a kid? Like⦠when you were nine? You wanted to be a hitman even then?â
âYes,â he said simply, running a hand through his hair to get it out of his eyes. The wind was having a field day with his longer than usual locks. âI always wanted to be just like my dad.â
âI donât remember that.â I said and looked back over the ocean. The waves had captured a balloon from someone and it was waving back and forth, a prisoner of the tide. âDid you even know what he did back then?â
âNot really. I didnât even know what a hitman was until I was about fourteen⦠then a year later he started training me and that was the end of that.â He shrugged.
âDo you like being a hitman for the mob?â I asked, really very curious. I had this image forming in my head about what our future would be like and another of what it could be like. Did I dare to even dream about what our lives, our marriage could be?
âI do.â He said earnestly. âI like the hunt of it, tracking the person down, learning their habits, waiting for the perfect moment. Itâs like a huge mystery that only I can solve.â
I hesitated, not wanting to hurt his feelings or make him feel bad with what I was thinking.
