The term at peace was something Akhil often wondered about. Heâd heard how soothing the feeling was to actually be at peace but had never acquired it. However, small previews of that feeling came to him whenever he was in Navadaâs presence. He didnât know what to make of it initially. Akhil assumed it was just the lust of being around a beautiful woman. Yet there was a constant peace that consumed him when he heard the sweet tone of her voice. When she looked at him, her gaze almost made Akhilâs heart stop beating. Her spirit spilled into him, making him feel inebriated at times.
Akhilâs regard centered on Navada. Her lids were low due to the alcohol sheâd consumed at the club. She focused on his hands while giving him a hand massage. They were back at his place, spread out on the leather sectional listening to Marioâs âGet Backâ. Corded pendant lights provided a dim glow in his industrial-style loft that had been his home for the last five years.
âIf I was sober, your hand massage would've been a lot better,â she blurted with a slur in her words.
Smirking at her drunken speech, he replied, âItâs good enough.â
âI got that magic touch,â she bragged, wiggling her fingers.
Navada grabbed his other hand and began massaging it. While tending to his massage, she took a look around his place, acting as if she hadn't been there before.
âYou got a lot of money, huh?â
Laughing at her observation, Akhil asked, âWhy you say that?â
âBecause I donât know anyone who gets out of jail and comes home to a loft like this. Who are you for real?â
He chortled harder at her question. âIâm nobody special. Just a man who is financially responsible.â
âMmhmm,â she hummed. âThatâs what you say.â
âI wouldnât lie to you. I thought I told you that during our first conversation.â
âI know something you havenât told me.â
âWhat's that?â
âWhy did you go to jail? I think I've been patient enough, and I know I couldâve looked it up, but I wanted you to paint the picture for me.â
Akhil drew in a deep breath and exhaled. He wished he could put that chapter of his life behind him but Navada deserved to know.
âOkay, so, I used to own this car shop that operated like a mechanic shop. But behind the scenes it was an actual chop shop.â
âSo you use to cut the cars up?â
He shrugged. âYeah but it was much more to it.â
Akhil had to be careful with his words because even though he wasnât a part of The Familia anymore, there was still a rule that he couldnât speak on it.
âLike what?â Navada asked.
ââ¦So, people would bring me cars to break down if they committed a crime. Say somebody used a car in a robbery, they would bring it to me, Iâd break it down, and get money for the parts. If somebody stole a car, I would do the same and weâd split money for the parts.â
âWhat if they committed a murder?â
Akhil stared at her, contemplating if he wanted to go that deep into his past.
