Chapter Nineteen: Dean

I’m too busy running through how the night’ll go and planning what to say to realize there’s a car parked in front of the cabin. It isn’t until I’m inside and see two heads sitting on the couch that I realize something’s up. Next to the blonde I’ve grown used to is a fire of curls.

“So. This is the sex god, huh?” the redhead says. Both she and Iz turn at the sound of the door. Iz smiles, but the redhead eyes me up. I suddenly feel naked under her scrutinizing stare.

“I’m sorry. Who are you?”

I look to Buttercup for answers, but she ignores me completely and turns to the girl.

“That’s him,” she confirms.

What the fuck is happening?

“Well, I guess I should introduce myself to the guy who isn’t boning my best friend, for some idiotic reason.”

Ahh, best friend. This makes more sense now...kinda.

“I mean, look at her,” she continues. “She’s hot!”

Trust me. I know.

“You must be Suze,” I say, extending my hand. After a second, she finally shakes it.

“So you know of me. Makes sense considering I’m the best thing in Iz’s life.”

“Enough to know you have a great sense of style when it comes to my girl.”

I don’t dare look at Buttercup to see her reaction to the whole my girl thing. I’m sure her face is doing that deer-in-the-headlight thing she does when she’s surprised.

“Not good enough to sleep with her, though,” she says as a statement and not a question.

I’m speechless. I have a hard enough time telling Buttercup why I’m suddenly going all abstinence on her. There’s no way I can tell her friend. What is it with girls and their best friends, anyway? They’re always so protective of you not sleeping with them. But then when you don’t, they get pissed off anyway. I believe you really can’t win.

While I stand there with my mouth hanging open like a fish, the biggest grin forms across Suze’s face. Before I know it, she’s folding herself in half, laughing hysterically as Buttercup joins her. I repeat. What the fuck is happening?

“Jeez, Dean,” Suze howls. “You should see your face.”

Not one for being the butt end of a joke that I know nothing about, I force a laugh.

“Can I talk to you for a sec?” Iz asks.

Without having the time to react, she grabs my arm and pulls me into the bedroom. Suze says something as we leave, but I don’t care to listen. I’m too focused on getting Iz alone and figuring out what her best friend is doing here.

“So you’ve met Suze,” she says, keeping her arms pulled tight across her body.

“What the hell, Buttercup? A warning would’ve been nice.”

“If I had the time to warn you, I would’ve. She honest to God dropped by without telling me. Trust me. Said she got worried I wasn’t answering her texts and thought I was murdered or something and came here. I didn’t know she was coming until she was less than an hour away. Are.
