Wrestling with My New Identity

I went home overwhelmed by what had happened, keeping it to myself. The next night of prayer, I decided to stay home because I didn’t want the pastor’s words to make my heart so vulnerable again. Even the next night, I fought the urge to go back because I wasn’t ready to hear more of God’s goodness. But three days after I committed my life to Christ, I felt God speaking directly to my heart while I was sleeping. When I heard God’s voice in my heart, it felt like rain and fresh wind blowing through me. It was like no other feeling I’d had before. God was still pursuing me, even in my slumber.

That night God spoke to me through a dream. I felt like I was moving toward something precious and beautiful. I was traveling ahead swiftly, sort of walking on air, leaving what was behind me as I moved toward this beautiful place. I didn’t fully understand what it meant, but I knew the dream was from God, and my heart was expectant.

The next day I did go back to Restoration Church. The day was designated for prayer and fasting for all genocide survivors. I could tell these people praying were sincere and their prayers were powerful, so I decided to join them in their fasting. I hadn’t prayed much before, but my heart for prayer kept growing in the following months, and I was beginning to grow as a Christian.

Initially I thought I had merely stumbled upon an unexpected gathering place in Restoration Church, but now I believe God guided my steps that night. He says that those who seek him will find him, and though I didn’t know who God was on a personal level, I was searching for him, looking for truth. He met me right where I was. My church has restored me in ways I never thought possible—no longer am I known as bapfuye bahagazi, the “walking dead.”
