Sunday, Day 14

“Hey kiddo, you don’t have to come with me,” Dad said at the door on his way out.

“But I always go with you,” I said, though that wasn’t true. I hadn’t gone with him last Sunday. I’d come home from the clinic that day and spent most of it sleeping.

“Yeah, but you need to take it easy.”

I frowned. Dad was going to collect the recycling. I usually went and helped him lug everything, but I couldn’t do any heavy hauling yet. My back wasn’t up to it. But I thought he’d like the company.

He reached out and ruffled my hair. I scowled and ducked away. “Go watch some TV,” he said.

I sighed. I really didn’t want to spend the day in the apartment. I had ants in my pants, as Cora might say. What was there to do? I picked up my phone and checked it. No new messages, but I saw Noah’s again, and it reminded me that I needed to give Damien his pills back and tell him what Noah had found out.

I sent him a text. *Hey, can I come see you?*

A few minutes later, I received my reply. *Yes.*

I arched an eyebrow at his short reply. I figured he’d say more, but at least he had replied.

Now I just had to decide what to tell Mom. She wouldn’t like it if I said I was going to Damien’s suite. She might even forbid it. I didn’t want to lie, but I saw no other choice. “Hey Mom, I’m going to go hang out with Angela,” I said.

She was in my room making my bed. I still couldn’t manage that simple chore without pain. She looked up as she twitched a wrinkle out of the comforter. “Okay, honey. When do you think you’ll be back?”

It was about ten o’clock. I didn’t think I’d be at Damien’s long, but I knew better than to ever assume I’d know what would happen when it came to him. “I don’t know. Do you need me back at a particular time?”

She thought about it and shook her head. “By dinner is fine with me.”

I nodded and headed out. I considered sending Angela a text letting her know I’d involved her in my lie, but didn’t really see the point. I was pretty sure Mom and Dad wouldn’t discover it.

I rode the elevator down and found Jenkins and Boyles waiting in the lobby. I tripped to a halt when I saw them. I hadn’t expected them, but I should’ve figured they’d be down here. Would they rat me out? Jenkins had been with me the last time I’d gone to Damien’s place. If she’d reported it, it hadn’t been passed on to my parents.

I needed to get the pills to Damien. I took a deep breath and composed myself.

“Good morning,” I said.

Jenkins gave me a friendly smile. “Good morning, Sarah. Where to today?”

“I need to go by Damien’s suite.”

She nodded. They flanked me on either side and we walked to the central courtyard.
