Sunday, Day 14
âHey kiddo, you donât have to come with me,â Dad said at the door on his way out.
âBut I always go with you,â I said, though that wasnât true. I hadnât gone with him last Sunday. Iâd come home from the clinic that day and spent most of it sleeping.
âYeah, but you need to take it easy.â
I frowned. Dad was going to collect the recycling. I usually went and helped him lug everything, but I couldnât do any heavy hauling yet. My back wasnât up to it. But I thought heâd like the company.
He reached out and ruffled my hair. I scowled and ducked away. âGo watch some TV,â he said.
I sighed. I really didnât want to spend the day in the apartment. I had ants in my pants, as Cora might say. What was there to do? I picked up my phone and checked it. No new messages, but I saw Noahâs again, and it reminded me that I needed to give Damien his pills back and tell him what Noah had found out.
I sent him a text. *Hey, can I come see you?*
A few minutes later, I received my reply. *Yes.*
I arched an eyebrow at his short reply. I figured heâd say more, but at least he had replied.
Now I just had to decide what to tell Mom. She wouldnât like it if I said I was going to Damienâs suite. She might even forbid it. I didnât want to lie, but I saw no other choice. âHey Mom, Iâm going to go hang out with Angela,â I said.
She was in my room making my bed. I still couldnât manage that simple chore without pain. She looked up as she twitched a wrinkle out of the comforter. âOkay, honey. When do you think youâll be back?â
It was about ten oâclock. I didnât think Iâd be at Damienâs long, but I knew better than to ever assume Iâd know what would happen when it came to him. âI donât know. Do you need me back at a particular time?â
She thought about it and shook her head. âBy dinner is fine with me.â
I nodded and headed out. I considered sending Angela a text letting her know Iâd involved her in my lie, but didnât really see the point. I was pretty sure Mom and Dad wouldnât discover it.
I rode the elevator down and found Jenkins and Boyles waiting in the lobby. I tripped to a halt when I saw them. I hadnât expected them, but I shouldâve figured theyâd be down here. Would they rat me out? Jenkins had been with me the last time Iâd gone to Damienâs place. If sheâd reported it, it hadnât been passed on to my parents.
I needed to get the pills to Damien. I took a deep breath and composed myself.
âGood morning,â I said.
Jenkins gave me a friendly smile. âGood morning, Sarah. Where to today?â
âI need to go by Damienâs suite.â
She nodded. They flanked me on either side and we walked to the central courtyard.
