Two hours of sitting around hoping Cassy would stop by my table to say hello had proven to be a waste of my time. Iâd tried motioning for her to come over. Iâd even gotten up and gone straight to her, attempting to start a conversation.
Nothing.
Out of options and unwilling to go home without at least a quick chat, I ran toward the ladiesâ room, slammed the door behind me, and locked it for good measure.
âWhat are you doing?â Cassy demanded with a disgusted look on her face.
Loulou was the one who came up with the bright idea for me to follow Cassy into the bathroom and hold her hostage until she agreed to talk.
âLooking for some answers,â I shot back, leaning back against the door with my arms crossed over my chest. "Why did you swap out the internship forms. Huh?"
"I didn't. Shows what you know," she responded without any hesitation; however, her voice went high on the end as if she were asking a question. "Now get out of my way."
Cassy and I had taken many of the same classes for the past four years now, and this past week weâd spoken to each other more than in all the time before. In our second year, the professor had even assigned us to work on the same group project. Of course, Cassy did nothing to help, but then bragged to anyone who would listen about our A. Thatâs just the kind of person sheâd always beenâbrash, useless.
"Sure, I can do that. Just as soon as you confess to murdering Professor Michaels." I grabbed my phone out of my pocket, activated the record app, and held it out to Cassy like a reporter with a microphone.
Cassy shifted from foot to foot, her blonde ponytail swinging behind her. She wore a T-shirt with a smiling cartoon coffee cup emblazoned across its front. Her eyes widened and her mouth dropped opened. She made a noise that sounded like a cross between a grunt and a gasp before saying, "I didn't kill her. Okay?"
I kept the recording going, but slipped the phone back into my pocket. With my hands free once more, I pulled out two sheets of paper and quickly unfolded them.
"Funny, because I have proof." I held up the forged recommendation letter and the real one Professor Michaels had written for me beside it.
Cassy thrust a hand on her hip and stared at me with cold eyes. "Whatever it is you think you have there, itâs not proof of a murder.â
She yanked her copy of letter out from my hand and tore it into tiny pieces. "Be real, Lisa. Even if Professor Michaels had tried to get me expelled for this stupid thing, I wouldn't have killed her over it."
"Then why did you try to frame me?" I asked, blinking hard so that angry tears wouldnât accidentally fall. "You know I couldnât have done this. Donât you?"
Cassy looked away for a second. She seemed⦠almost sorry. "Well, if you went
