CHAPTER 23

Roy had quit smoking years ago, but he needed one now. He stormed out of the custody unit and went out to the rear car park. He found a spot by the wall, with only rows of cars for company. He kicked the wall, then banged his fist against it. He was about to headbutt the wall as well, but common sense prevailed. He roared against the wall; fists clenched against it. A ball of frustration exploded inside him, radiating against the walls.

It was Burgess. He knew it. He could see it in the man’s eyes. But he had no evidence to link Johnny’s abduction to Burgess. The fact that he knew where his father was taking him was not enough, and any lawyer would make mincemeat of their argument. They had even less to link Burgess to Eddie, but Roy felt it in his bones. Burgess had taken him. He even had a sly smile on his face as he denied all knowledge.

Robin’s face flashed before his eyes, unbidden. An over excited, thin shouldered, little boy, his smile bigger than his face could fit. Then he was gone, running away into the woods, the sunlight glimmering on his gold chain. That heaviness came back to claim him, settling like a black glacier in his heart, dragging him to the ground. He slumped to his knees, and stayed like that for a while, as if in supplication to an evil deity who held him in a remorseless grip.

He shook his head and held on to the wall as he stood. Thoughts of Robin came with the waves of guilt, and that brought up on useless rage. No, that wouldn’t do.

He needed to keep his mind clear and functioning. He strode back inside, waving at the two uniform constables going past him.

He picked up a coffee and a few muffins and sandwiches, then went up to the detectives’ office. His team weren’t there, so he put the food on his desk, and started munching on his BLT. He hadn’t realised how hungry he was. Sarah appeared, her cheeks flushed, and lips pressed together.

“What happened?”

“We can’t find Duncan Reid. He’s not at work, where Rizwan left him. His wife says he’s not at home.”

Roy nodded. He pointed at the sandwiches. “Have one if you’re hungry. Got some veggie ones as well.”

“I don’t eat bread, but thanks. Trying to keep as close to zero carbs as possible.”

Roy grunted, and bit into his sarnie. Rizwan and Oliver appeared with cups of coffee.

“I’m done with the CCTV,” Rizwan said, picking up an egg and cress sandwich at Roy’s invitation. He sat down at his laptop and pulled up the images.

Oliver said, “Burns wants to see Burgess. Shall I tell him you’re done with him?”

“I’m just getting started with him,” Roy growled. “Long way to go. We need to charge him to make sure he doesn’t get out of here. But yes, tell Burns to go ahead, and tell him I want his report when he’s done.
