CHAPTER TEN
After an inordinate amount of time trying to look effortlessly stylish and eligible, I walked down to Campers and bought a cappuccino to wait for Jet. I hadnât seen Angelo all week but I wasnât surprised. Now I knew he was a shifter, any conversation we were likely to have would be difficult at best. Whoever he was, he didnât have the guts to just walk up to me and ask me out even though he had supposedly âchosenâ me. I just hoped he hadnât followed Jonah home to do something terrible to him.
As it turned out, I didnât have to worry. I saw Jonah that morning as he came in for a takeaway latte. He gave me a little wave but we didnât speak. I was monumentally relieved, but saddened. If this shifter guy was possessive enough to scare away potential friends, I didnât want anything to do with him.
As I waited, I almost convinced myself Jet wouldnât show up. Someone would come in with a broken car and he would forget about our date. I told myself to get a grip as I waited.
At five past eleven, he walked in.
He nodded at me, then went to the counter. I joined him.
âIâm buying you coffee, remember?â
âOh. Uh, thanks. Iâll have an espresso.â
Damn, Iâd hoped heâd want a latte, something that would last longer than a couple of gulps, anyway. Maybe that was his get-out clause.
âWhereâs your dog?â He asked as I brought the tray over.
âHe wasnât mine. He just appeared a couple of weeks back. Heâs disappeared again but Iâm not sorry, to be honest. He was a pain in the ass.â I tried to keep the tremor from my voice. Angelo was the last thing I wanted to talk about. âHow was the family party?â
âYeah, good. Grace loved the quilt. Never seen her cry before. Sheâs got it in her special room. Weâre not allowed in there but itâs cool. Itâs good sheâs got a place for nice things.â
I hid my smile. âAw, I knew sheâd love it.â
âUh huh.â Jet nodded seriously. âHowâs business?â
âGood. Better than I expected. Yours?â
He shrugged. âPeople will always need their cars and bikes fixed. The place has been in my family for years. Weâve been in the town a long time.â
âSo they would have known my â¦â I paused. Did I really want to talk about my mom and dad? It would inevitably lead to telling Jet about their deaths. A bummer of a subject for a first date.
âYeah, I know.â For the first time, Jet looked at me with some sympathy. âIs that why you went up to Black Bear Creek?â
âI guess.â I really didnât want to talk about it.
âAnd you walked all the way home?â
âI donât remember a lot about that. All I know is, my truck broke down so I must have walked.â
âYour truck was fine. There was nothing wrong with it.â
âOh. Why didnât it start then?â
Two endearing little dimples appeared either side of his shapely lips. âI must have missed something.
