The conference room hums with the low murmur of voices as we gather for our weekly team meeting. I sit at the long table, surrounded by my colleagues, as we listen attentively to the presentation.

Alexander, on the other hand, looks bored and like he’d rather be anywhere but here. I smile to myself, deepening the shade around his chin to depict his five o’clock shadow in the portrait I’m drawing of him inside my notepad.

He meets my eyes and gives me a look that has me smothering a giggle that’ll draw attention to me. Then he discreetly whips his phone out and starts to type. Seconds later, my phone vibrates in my pocket, and I pull it out.

“Do I get to see this new drawing of me?” Stunned, I whip my head up and raise a curious brow, to which he starts to type again. “You have that focused look you always get when you draw, with the tiny crease between your eyebrows.”

My smile grows wider, and I get that tingly feeling I always get whenever I’m around him. The fact that he and I have gotten close enough for him to know that tiny tidbit about me says a lot, and it fills me with warmth.

“Well then, stop texting me so I can concentrate, or you’re gonna end up with an ugly drawing,” I text back, sticking my tongue out at him when he spares me a glance after reading.

To my right, Freya rolls her eyes when she notices my silent interaction with Alexander, but I pay her no heed. She, like the rest of my colleagues, has been spreading all sorts of rumors about Alex and me since we became friends, but I no longer let them affect me.

Alex makes a show of dropping his phone on the table before sending a subtle wink my way that makes my heart flutter. I have to remind myself that he and I are just friends, and exploring anything more would be too complicated between us.

Ignoring my racing heartbeat, I return to my drawing, capturing his expressive dark eyes that hold such magnetic allure that I find myself getting lost in them on more occasions than I’d like to admit.

I’m in the middle of perfecting the lines around his firm yet supple lips and trying not to think about how amazing they had felt against mine that very night when a loud vibration sound fills the room.

Everyone’s heads, including the presenter’s, swivel around the room in search of the direction of the sound. At the head of the table, Alexander’s eyes dart around the room, landing on each of us briefly before settling on his phone, which happens to be the one vibrating relentlessly on the table.

His voice is strained as he answers the call, and I can sense the tension radiating from him.

I exchange concerned glances with my coworkers, and we fall into a hushed silence, allowing Alexander some privacy during this unexpected interruption. My heart skips a beat as
