Gamblers practice ways to follow the cards through shuffles and cuts. That way they know where certain cards are during the game, and can shape their strategy accordingly. One such system works as follows.

The magician glances through a borrowed deck. Then he gives the deck two cuts. “A card I saw, the four of clubs, should now be tenth from the top of the deck.” The magician counts to the tenth card and it is the ♣4. He gives the deck two more cuts. “This time I cut a little deeper. Another card I saw, the nine of diamonds, should now be eleventh from the top.” He counts to the eleventh card. It is the ♦9. One more time he gives the deck two quick cuts. “This time I cut deeper still. The queen of clubs should be exactly twelfth from the top.” He counts to the twelfth card. It is the ♣Q.

The trick contains a bonus feature that we shall describe after we explain how the trick is done.

Method: The trick is really a swindle. When the borrowed deck is handed to you, glance through it and remember the cards that lie tenth, eleventh, and twelfth from the top. The rest of the demonstration is a matter of handling a fake cut.

Talk to the audience about the way gamblers follow the track of certain cards through shuffles and cuts. Hold the face-down deck in the left hand, and grasp the deck from above with the right hand, Figure 68. The left hand takes the lower half of the deck, turns palm down, and deposits this packet on the table, Figure 69.
