Shrishti and Prashant: The Wedding Bells

Once in a while,

Right in the middle of an ordinary life, Love gives us a fairy tale.

~Anonymous

For most of us, the one-year MBAprogramme is all about studies, latenightsandloadsofstress. It’saperiodwhen one hardly gets time to eat or sleep. So when I got to know that one of my seniors had got married while pursuing her course, I was surprised. It was difficult to imagine taking such an adventurous move, leave alone actually finding someone who had taken the bold step. To add to that, it was not a love but an arranged marriage. After listening to the story of Rahul and Dimple, who had got married just before Rahul’s MBA began, the story of Shrishti and Prashant stood in sharp contrast to their’s. I was sure their experience would be worth sharing in my book.

Excited, I called them up and scheduled an interview. And soon I was on a Skype video call with Shrishti,

54 listening to her story of full of love, fun and confusion. ¯

Shrishti came from a middle-class family where parents educated their daughters only for the sake of finding suitable husbands for them. She was the only child of her parents. So as soon as she had completed her graduation, Shrishti’s parents wanted her to get married. Shrishti had no objections either. However, when she excelled in her graduation exam and was offered one of the best jobs on her campus, her parents were really proud of her. They decided to go against society to let her focus on her career for a few years.

“My parents saw in me a dream to excel professionally and my dream became theirs. I worked for five years. Meanwhile, my parents started to look for a groom for me. However, I had a very good position at work and finding a guy who would be a good match was turning out to be a tough task.”

As Shrishti climbed up the corporate ladder, her boss advised her to complete her post-graduation so that she could do even better.

“I prepared for the GMAT without informing my parents and made it to the one-year executive programme at IIM Calcutta. It was a dream for many of my friends. But a tough challenge lay ahead – convincing my parents that I should study further. I was doing well and had a well-paying job. But all my cousins were mothers by now, so there was no question of getting permission to study. Still I pleaded with my parents.”

Shrishti’s parents allowed her to go on one condition: the day they’d find a suitable match, she would have to agree to get married.

“I thought that my parents might not be able to find someone, and even if they did, I could take a break and come home. It didn’t seem like a big deal so I readily agreed and reached the campus.”

After six months of the PGPEX programme, Shrishti was immersed in her studies and really enjoying her new-found freedom away from home. They hardly had any time to eat or sleep.
