Clouds covered the sun, and drizzle continued as the next group of trained searchers relieved us. The intermittent heavy downpours during the night had most likely obliterated any sign or tracks. I was faced with a stark reality. Anna MacDonald had come to some harm, perhaps a bad fall on the rocks or an encounter with a wild animal, but some type of harm.

The search would continue. Now I asked searchers to not only look for Anna but also to watch carefully for anything that might be construed as evidence. They would use the technique of going over something meticulously but as fast as possible.

Anything found now—a piece of cloth, a speck of blood, a candy wrapper that may look like nothing—could be a critical piece of a bigger puzzle. It was not yet a crime scene, but we needed to handle it as if it was. We could not keep this quiet for very long. Eventually, at best, we would have to keep things under control.

Julie and Martha Bork were at the MacDonalds’. I called Julie and gave her a progress report. She said Dorothy insisted on putting together some food and drinks for the searchers. She thought they would be on the way within the hour.

Rural Wisconsin fire departments are manned primarily by well-trained volunteers, many with extensive search and rescue training. The fire chief started to go down his list of volunteer firefighters calling each and bringing them up to speed. Most of his men and women worked regular jobs, and a callout meant they wouldn’t show up for work until the callout was over. Their employers were used to the idea that they would lose an employee or two for a while when a pager went off. Everybody agreed to agree on this because the next call might be at their house.

I called Tim Stewart, the director of Namekagon County Emergency Management and the cousin of County Board Chairman Scott Stewart. He answered the phone groggily.

“Tim, this is Sheriff Cabrelli. I need you to immediately activate emergency status, fire up the Emergency Command Center, and drive it to the Musky Run trailhead.”

The emergency command center (ECC) was an aluminum-sided, brown and white behemoth Winnebago motor home. When Jim Rawsom was sheriff, he seized it as part of a rolling drug house investigation. Once it was awarded to Namekagon County by the court, Jim drove it over to Doc O’Malley’s garage. Doc went over it stem to stern, doing maintenance and repairs. When he was done, he determined that while it was an older vehicle, it was in pretty good shape. Working with the local Lions Club and Habitat for Humanity, the inside of the Winnebago was outfitted into a first-rate emergency command center. One of the jobs the emergency management director was paid to do was make certain that the ECC was always ready to go. While rarely used, it would become the center of any emergency situation when needed.

Stewart still sounded like he’d spent a
