CHAPTER 15

The intoxicating fresh scent of Jamie’s cologne wafts in my direction as he moves past me into the apartment. Since the incident now formally known as Kiss-Gate, my thoughts have swung like a pendulum from ball-tightening goodness remembering how his lips felt on mine, to the fear I've cost myself the biggest opportunity of my career.

A general sense of confusion is what I ended up with.

“Let me just grab my shirt—you know, so you don’t have to complain about my state of undress.” I shoot a smirk over my shoulder, heading for the room I’m staying in.

“It wasn’t a complaint.”

“No?” I stop, arching a brow.

“No. Just a general observation.” He pops a shoulder with a playfulness I haven’t yet witnessed.

Ducking inside the room, I scoop the faded-from-too-many-washes purple NYU t-shirt from the bed.

The pregame show for the Storm/Lions game plays on the TV but cuts off as a video chat notification flashes across the screen. With our friends spread across the county, our entire squad had the same video chat system installed.

Patting my pockets, I come up empty. Where did I leave my phone? Guess I shouldn’t be surprised Maddey is trying to reach me this way.

Except…

Jamie is here.

“I have to answer that or she’s just going to keep calling.” I point to where a wonky picture of Maddey with bunny ears and whiskers flashes across the flat-screen.

“No worries.” Jamie shrugs.

“If you don’t want her to know you’re here, if you sit in that chair”—I point to one of the massage chairs—“she won’t see you.”

Folding my lips inward, I debate if I should say anything or not.

“But I can promise you this.” I make sure to maintain eye contact so he understands the sincerity of my next words. “She won’t breathe a word of this if she knows.”

His Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows. It’s like I can see the pro/con list he’s coming up with in his head.

I understand the need for discretion, but in the same breath, I’ve never been one to keep secrets—at least for long—from my friends. They are just as much my family as my parents.

The call cuts off, only to pop back up a few seconds later.

Jamie chuckles. “You weren’t kidding.”

“Not even a little bit.”

“Go ahead and answer.” He waves a hand at the TV.

“You sure?”

He may not realize it, but it’s a big step.

“Yeah.” With an encouraging smile, he crosses one foot over his knee and settles back against the couch.

Here goes nothing.

“It’s about damn time,” Maddey complains the moment I answer the call.

“Geez, Madz. Take a chill pill, will ya?”

“Don’t give me that, Samuel. You said you’d call me when you got back to the city.”

“Oh-kay, Mom.” Sarcasm drips from my words. To be fair, it’s really the only way to handle her.

“Whatever. You know I—” Her eyes go wide. “Ohhhhh, now I get it.”

She’s spotted Jamie.

“And what exactly would that be, Tink?” I play dumb to mess with her.

“You become friends with rock stars and forget all about the little people in your life.
