Happiness: The Soulâs Longing
A common note resounds as to why we harmonize: happiness. This could be the main scientific outcome of a fully expressed, connected, empowered soul. In one study, 85 percent of choir members agreed with the statement âsinging has made me a happier person.â Happiness outperformed other choices, such as feeling good after a performance (70 percent) or releasing negative thoughts or feelings (66 percent). It seems that nothing beats a soul in harmony.18 In the New Horizons Band study, subjects reported that the bonds between band members in soul-felt relationships were most responsible for their happiness. In fact, the relationships created through harmonizing scored even higher than improved health and reduced pain and medical problems in terms of what most contributed to band membersâ happiness.19
In summary, the principle of sympathetic vibration between instruments seems to be similar to the sympathetic mirroring neuron systems in animals and humans alike. Compassion, empathy, and sympathy arise through the harmonic experience of seeing and hearing actions that move the soul. When we step across the threshold from watching performers into co-creating music together, in ensembles of singing or playing instruments, we experience the sense of belonging that is the medicine of harmony. The conclusion is this: we are wired to harmonize.
