CHAPTER TWENTY

Kelly picked up her glass of wine and took a swig. "You never suggest just going out for a drink." She looked around The Tavern. "This place hasn't changed since we were in high school."

I was pretty sure it hadn't changed since the 1950s. The faded décor, crumbling wood paneling, posters for Olympia Beer, chipped tile floor, and cash register were the same. Even the board that said Beer—10 cents had the price crossed out and changed twenty times. And the jar of pickles on the counter looked like a biohazard.

A drink was what I needed, and this was the closest place. Or maybe it was just getting out of that museum. I didn't want to go home and sit around, doing nothing but waiting for Rex to come home.

"One theory," I said slowly, as if testing out the words. "Is that Britta was murdered to keep whatever device they used to find their drones out of our hands, right?"

Kelly thought for a moment. "I don't know. Why not just send the drone to the bottom of the reservoir at the quarry? Even if they had something to find it, it could be damaged beyond repair." She swallowed a sip of wine. "At least, that's what I'd do."

I always wondered what they'd find in that quarry if it ever dried up. "Okay…that makes sense. So why kill Britta, then? Why not just knock her out and take the device? And why wouldn't they think the McBride Corporation would just send another one?"

Kelly threw her hands up. "Maybe the killer is an idiot? That shouldn't come as a surprise. Most of them are. Most killers get caught."

She wasn't wrong. I'd heard Rex say that for years. "So let's say the killer isn't very bright and thinks that killing Britta and taking the technology is the end of that. Why kill her and leave her like Deliria? Why go to all the trouble of killing Sheldon just like Carlos was killed? We still don't know how he managed it with Hilly sleeping downstairs."

Kelly snorted. "Yeah, well, for all we know, Hilly isn't the light sleeper she thinks she is."

I sat back on the bar stool, and it wobbled. "I'm just saying that it seems like the killer is going to a lot of trouble to make things seem like one thing."

"But you think it's something else." Kelly nodded. "Misdirection of some sort."

I ticked off on my fingers. "First, the drone goes missing. Then the technology for the drone goes missing. We could be dealing with something else. Foreign spies are always looking for intel on the latest technology. Why couldn't it be something like that? They don't even care if someone else comes out with another device—they're already in Beijing with both the drone and the technology to find it."

"You think this might be international espionage?" Kelly asked. "Huh. I guess I didn't think of that. You may be right."

I continued. "And if that's the case, then the killer is going to be difficult to unmask.
