She stopped to straighten her clothes, took a breath and slipped back into the meeting room. A heated debate was underway over whether coffee or tea was better. It was one of those meaningless little workplace discussions that could escalate quickly.

Hazel sensed the dark energy in the room, and spoke loudly, interrupting June’s treatise on the benefits of the antioxidants in coffee.

“Okay,” she said, trying to get the meeting finished quickly. "What do you think about 'Dunedin welcomes you'? Simple. Friendly." Four faces looked blankly at her.

She flicked through some of the notes she had written. "Or how about Dunedin Fresh?"

"Sounds cold,” Sia said.

“It sounds like the name of a supermarket,” Perry said. "Alright, this is one I liked.” He paused for effect. “‘Come and breathe the clean air.’"

Hazel shook her head. They had been arguing for ages, and it didn’t feel like they were getting anywhere. She could sense the desperation in the other three, who wanted the bonus badly, and she was about to give up. Leave them to fight over it.

"I don't think we want to imply that everywhere else is polluted,” June said, taking a muffin from the plate in the middle. “What if we don't have the cleanest air in the country?"

People nodded. “What about… Enchanting?" Sia spread her hands with a flourish.

Hazel liked that, but June shook her head. "We can't over-sell it. Then people will just mock.”

“Any publicity is good publicity, right?”

Hazel thought it was mostly because there were no snacks left, but everyone finally agreed. This was following two hours of brainstorming, and a further hour of refining drafts.

“‘A Wild Welcome.’ That’ll do.” Sia started packing up her laptop and folders into her bag. “Congratulations, Hazel! Now, let’s get home.”

Hazel sat back in her chair, while the others packed up their things. “Well done,” June said to her as she left.

That evening, she typed up the proposal and the meaning behind it, and sent it through, while Joel was cooking dinner.

“Honestly, I think we would have gone for anything at that point,” she said, over the hissing noise of the frying pan. “It wasn’t even anything that special.”

“I’m still so proud of you.”

The smell of the steak searing made her stomach complain. “Thanks. I’m quite proud of me too. But I feel really bad for Sia, who works so hard. And what about Perry and his young son?”

“You can’t help everyone, though,” he said. “And you work hard too!”

She couldn’t wait to see June’s face when she gave her the money.
