Chapter 17: You Get What You Get

On the road back home, Alistair pulled out his personal map orb. The travels in the last few days had mapped about a third of the valley now. He used the enchantment to zoom around the map, examining everything in detail. This thing was pretty useful. He wasn’t sure how to tell if it found an unclaimed treasure, though nothing unexpected showed up on the map. Cole asked to look at it, and he handed it over.

“Have you thought about what you want to do after all this?” Alistair said.

“Huh?” Cole had been absorbed with examining the orb, fascinated with how detailed it was.

“Let’s assume that everything goes well, we beat Murk’s Rapture, get the gold, and you use the experience to graduate with high marks,” Alistair said, “What then?”

“Well, I have been thinking about that. And I know you and mom want me to be safe, stay close to home. But I just don’t see myself being happy doing that. I want to be out there, experiencing new things, advancing my class. I know it will be dangerous, death around every corner, but you have taught me well. I know when to run. The big wide world is calling to me. That is why I want to hook up with the Adventurer's League and head out to the Adrian sea. Bradley said his family is sending him up that way, and I figured I would tag along. And after I am stronger, who knows, maybe I would like to come back home and settle here. I hope you can respect my decision.”

Alistair laughed, “Have you been practicing that?”

“Yeah. How was it?”

He held his hand out and wobbled it back and forth, “It could be better. When you give this speech to your mother, don’t mention the danger. She knows all about that life, but no need to remind her. Just talk about wanting to see the world. The bit about coming back to live here when you are older is good though, keep that in.”

“Thanks, dad,” Cole said. They walked in companionable silence for a bit before Cole said, “So Dad, I have been thinking about schema a lot today. Nobody ever talks about her. She rewards us when we kill things and she punishes you with red crystals. Everyone talks about the eight Gods, but isn't schema the ninth God? She seems like the God of Death.”

Alistair smiled, “That is a lot of misconceptions in one question. First off, schema isn’t a her, it isn’t a person at all. Schema is a system controlling the wild magic of the world. You know that, you went to school. People do talk about schema, but most people think it is boring. People talk about calculus too, but your friends probably don’t talk about that much either.”

“Yeah, ok, maybe there are people out there that study schema. But if it is really just a system controlling the wild magic of the world, why does it reward killing so much?”

“It doesn’t just reward killing.
