CHAPTER 14
Back at Aerie Pines, Piper hurried off to eat something before warming up her fingers and changing into her summer concert white. The concert wouldn't start until dusk, but she had to be to the amphitheater an hour before that for a symphony meeting.
Irene hung back with me when Piper ran off, moving at a lazier speed and asking me to point out what each building was used for.
The large hotel where Ludwig had apparently been staying while he tried to get access to one of the cabins overlooked the parking lot. In a moment of weakness, Irene admitted they'd been to see his room but hadn't found anything of interest.
As we followed the path up toward the amphitheater we neared the ticket office on the left, but veered off in the other direction around the back of the gift shop.
Tucked up against the stream and forest on the other side of the green, the restaurant already looked busy. Even though it was a late concert, people liked to arrive earlyâto eat, or, if they had lawn tickets, to choose their spot before it got crowded.
We passed the group of administration buildings, then went up the hill to the next tier.
âI haven't been down there. Where does it go?â Irene asked, pointing to a smaller path that went up higher.
âThat's the Lodge. A place musicians and staff can stay in just a room instead of an apartment or condo.â
âOctavia,â someone called.
I focused on the path in front of me. A woman with short-cropped hair raised a hand in greeting as she broke into a jog.
âI didn't expect to see you already,â I said as she joined us. I introduced her to Irene. âBethanne teaches at one of the summer music programs down the road.â
Bethanne looked a little guilty. âI left my rosin in the back window of the car. It melted, of course, so I needed to buy more.â
I winced. It wasn't the first time she'd done that. âDid it get all over your car?â
She shook her head. âI was lucky this time. Hey, I heard you found Ludwig. Are you okay?â
I nodded. Bethanne had met Ludwig, of course. Everyone around here seemed to know everyone else, but Bethanne hadn't known him well enough to truly care that he was dead.
Although, if we're being honestâand since you're kind of living in my head, I suppose there's no point in being anything but honestâeven the people he knew best didn't seem to care he was gone. Except for Cora, of course, and that was more for the sake of their kids than because she still loved him.
Even though I sometimes thought she did. Still love him, I mean. I got the feeling she assumed they'd get back together after he went through his midlife crisis of only caring about himself.
Obviously that couldn't happen now.
Irene nudged me.
Oh, right. âI'm dealing with it.â
âDid he have a heart attack?â Bethanne asked. She was more subtle about it than some people I could nameâlike Xavier and Piperâbut she obviously just wanted the gossip.
