Speaking with Hugo had made me wonder, yet again, why I liked him so much. He was a frustrating and yet fascinating individual. What he wasn’t, in this instance, was correct. He seemed to think I was enjoying my evening with Laine – that would only be true if becoming ever the more terrified of your boss could be classed as enjoyment.

But I hadn’t realised, until tonight, how stifled I’d felt when it came to these gifts of mine, and until now I couldn’t speak about them with anyone but Hugo. Mam preferred we avoided the subject altogether, and Fee, with whom I was becoming friendlier by the day, had no idea about any of it.

So yes, I did want to stick around and talk with Laine some more, but not because I was enjoying his company. Firstly, I was hungry, and secondly, I wanted to know more about … well, people like us. Were there tricks we could utilise, ways to help us cope with the more urgent artefacts? But as soon as my stomach was full and my curiosity was sated, I was out of here. Hugo and I had made a deal, and I intended to make him honour it.

Before going back inside to Laine, I headed to the ladies’ room. It was as I neared the sinks to wash my hands that I saw her on the countertop: Dora, fast asleep in her teacup. It was the same one I always seemed to see her in, blue with red hearts, complete with a matching saucer.

For a brief moment, I wondered if I was hallucinating. I then looked behind me, checking that all of the toilet stalls were empty, before prodding the dormouse. ‘Wake up, Dora.’

She said something like ‘Nnngh!’ following it up with ‘Sleepy time,’ before finally opening her eyes and saying, ‘Oh, you’re here. About time.’

I didn’t really know what to say to that. It had been weeks since I’d seen her, and it had hardly been my fault.

‘Well?’ She smiled. ‘You woke me up. Aren’t you going to tell me what it is you want?’

‘Oh, good goddess.’ I took in a deep breath, trying to calm my irritation. ‘Dora, you disappeared from the museum. You’ve been gone for weeks, and I have no idea where you’ve been.’

‘So … you’re not going to thank me for phoning the Wayfarers and saving your life?’

‘That’s a good point, actually. I mean, I won’t bother asking you how you even operated the phone, because I’m unlikely to get a sensible answer. But where were you while all of that was going on? How did you see enough to tell the captain what was happening?’

‘Hmm …’ She appeared to be thinking about the question. ‘You know, it was all so long ago. I’m not sure I fully remember.’

I eyed her with suspicion. ‘You seem to forget a lot, Dora. You know, I’ve been lurking on a lot of witch-familiar forums in the past weeks, and what’s going on with you and me is not normal.
