I checked my appearance in the foyer mirror one last time before we left. Most of my dark hair lay concealed beneath my hat, but the ends that peeked out beneath the rim were unruly and unpredictable even on the best of days. It would have to do.
I frowned at the mirror, poking my cheek. My skin felt tight, where I had laid the blush on thicker than I probably should have. The charcoal paste I had applied to my eyelashes made them stick, causing them to look more akin to the legs of a spider, rather than seeming like full, lush lashes.
I picked at a few of them, pulling them apart.
This isnât going to get any better unless I wash it all off, I grumbled internally. Which would not only be a waste of Joanâs stage makeup, but would also spoil the plan Miles came up with â
The front door swung open, Miles stepping inside. A rush of mild wind flew in behind him, scented with damp earth and rain. The temperature had risen almost fifteen degrees and the blanket of snow had given way to puddles and pockets of ice along the sides of the roads.
âAre you ready to go?â he asked. I noticed that his eyes widened as he fully took in the sight of me, but he didnât comment on the heaviness of my makeup. I was playing a role, after all. It was only sensible that I should look the part.
Miles himself popped a hat on his head, shadowing his face and almost changing the look of him entirely, before turning back to the door. âWeâd best be off,â he said.
We headed to the racetrack, discussing what we had learned one last time so that we might not only have our stories straight, but also be on the same page when we had the chance to speak with anyone there. We likely wouldnât have time to communicate with one another about the investigation once we were there, and would have to lean on cues from each other to understand and agree upon our next steps.
Furthermore, we decided to take our chances and continue with our disguises as Mr. and Mrs. Swanson. We knew Mr. Norman had seen through it, but we didnât think he would have told anyone. Miles thought the man had too much pride, and would simply be keeping an eye out for us.
âWhat will he do?â I asked. âIf he catches us, wonât he just have us thrown out?â
âI donât knowâ¦â Miles said. âI suppose we will have to keep our eye out for him, too, wonât we?â
I didnât like the uneasy tone in his voice, but I had trusted him up to this point on more than one occasion. That meant I could trust him with this, couldnât I?
âDid Mr. Green mention where we were to meet them?â I asked as Miles offered his arm to me. We had to park almost at the road, as the parking area was packed with row after row of cars.
